We as Muslims perform Qurbani on 10th Dhul Hijjah in the remembrance of Story of Ibrahim (A.S). Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) saw in a dream that Allah (S.W.T) commanded him to sacrifice his only son, Ismail. It would have been heart-wrenching for Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) to sacrifice his son with his bare hands. However, obeying Allah (S.W.T), he was ready to follow His Order.

He started to travel towards Mount Arafat with his son Ismail, accompanied by a knife and rope. After reaching the destination, Hazrat Ibrahim (S.W.T) told his son about the dream, and Ismail too was ready to fulfil what Allah (S.W.T) had commanded. Though, he suggested his father blindfold himself so that he won’t see his son in pain. Moreover, he advised his father to tie him up so he could not move out of his place.

As Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) proceeded, Allah (S.W.T) replaced Ismail with a ram. He removed his blindfold and found the slaughtered ram while his son was standing right infront of him.

It was just a test from Allah (S.W.T) and we can indeed see that the prophet was ready to sacrifice his loved ones for Allah (S.W.T). In the remembrance of story of Ibrahim we celebrate Eid-ul-Adha on 10th Dhul Hajj. We nurture and pet qurbani animals, and sacrifice them on Eid-ul-Adha.

Most people might question that is Qurbani farz or sunnah?
By referring to the correct view of Islam, Qurbani is considerable as a sunnah. Sunnah means that the people who perform Qurbani will be rewarded but it is not a sin on the ones who do not do it. Generally, any person who is able to give Zakat (saheb-e-nisab)it is wajib on them to perform Qurbani. Moreover, it is highly recommended for saheb-e-nisab Muslims to perform it. We do it as an act to commemorate Hazrat Ibrahim’s sacrifice, as mentioned in the Quran. If a person can afford to do Qurbani but doesn’t do it, he is not sinning. But he will miss out on a lot of rewards which Allah gives on performing Qurbani. Want to know how to do qurbani? Click here.

The time of performing Qurbani starts from the sunrise of 10th Dhu al-Hijjah and till the sunset of 12th Dhu al-Hijjah. According to the hadees, the best time to perform Qurbani is immediately after the Eid-ul-Adha prayers. It anybody slaughters their Qurbani animal before or after the above mentioned time. Moreover, qurbani can be done of the following animals: goat, sheep, cow.If not then it will be just meat for the family members and not is not counted as an act of Qurbani.

So, is qurbani farz or sunnah? Its definitely a sunnah.

Furthermore, we should do Qurbani for Allah and not to showoff people around us. May Allah accept our Qurbani and shower his blessings on us. Ameen.

There is a step by step Qurbani procedure in Islam, which you should follow to please Allah (S.W.T). It is not the just way to sacrifice animals on Eid-ul-Azha but is followed throughout the year for sacrificing halal animals. It is scientifically proven, the best way to sacrifice any animal as all the animal’s blood is drawn out, making the meat healthier and clean. Moreover, it gives the least pain to pain which is being slaughtered. Islam is indeed a beautiful religion.

    Qurbani Procedure

    It would be best if one sacrifices the Qurbani animal himself; however, it’s not necessary if you don’t know how to. The first and foremost step is to make the intention and make the animal lay down on the floor. Before slaughtering, you should nurture, feed and take care of the animal. Remember, not to sacrifice one animal in front of the other. The Qurbani animal‘s face should be pointing in the direction of Qibla. Then, place your right leg on the animal leg (don’t keep it really hard on the animal that would hurt it, just enough to ensure it doesn’t move off its place). The next step is to recite the Qurbani dua which is;

    Dua in Arabic:

    إِنِّي وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّماَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفَاً وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ . إِنَّ صَلاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ العَالَمِينَ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُوَبِذَلِكَ أُمِرْتُ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ المُسْلِمِينَ ، اللَّهُمَّ مِنْكَ وَلَكَ

    Translation in English:

“I have turned my face to that Being who has created the skies and the Earth in the state of the Straight Deen of Ibrahim – and I am not amongst the Mushrikeen. Definitely, my Salaat, my Ibadat and my living and dying is all for Allah, who is the Lord of the worlds, and who has no partner. I have been ordered (all that passed) I am amongst the Muslimeen (the obedient). O Allah this sacrifice is due to You granting us the ability to do so and it is for You”.

Next, slaughter the animal with a sharp knife while reciting out loud:

    بِسْمِ اللَّهِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Swiftly cut the windpipe, the gullet and the two jugular veins, don’t cut the head entirely. Lets all the blood flow out of the animal and immediately remove its skin. Slaughtered animals are not to be skinned until completely cold.

Women are also allowed to perform Qurbani, and if you don’t know how to slaughter an animal, it’s better to get the Qurbani done with anyone who knows how to and by following all the rules.

    Qurbani

In Islam, Qurbani is the act of sacrificing an animal with pure intention for Allah (SWT). All the Muslims around the world perform Qurbani of goats, sheep, cows and camel on the first three days of Eid-ul-Adha. This Eid is celebrated on from the 10th to 13th of Dhul Hijjah. It reminds us of the sacrifice of Ibrahim (as) thousands of years ago, who prepared himself to sacrifice his son’s life for Allah’s sake.

    Qurbani In Quran

Allah SWT guided us in the Quran to perform Qurbani. Following are the ayats which shows the importance of Qurbani for Muslims

    Ayat 1 :

    In (Al-‘An’am 6/162)

    qurbani in quran

“Say, Indeed, my prayer, my rights of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.”

Explanation of this ayat is as follows:

    • Islam guide to surrender ourselves before the commands of Allah SWT
    • All our worship and deeds are purely for Allah SWT
    • All our sacrifices which include Qurbani is only for Allah SWT
    • Allah is the only one to worship, and he is the Lord of the entire world

    Ayat: 2

    (Al-Haj 22/36)

    qurbani-in-hadith

And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols of Allah; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.

    Ayat 3 :

    (Al-Haj 22/28)

    qurbani in quran

“That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. So eat of them and feed the miserable and poor.”

    Ayat 4:

    ( Al-Kawthar 108/2)

So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].

All the above ayats are from Quran. These ayats signifies the importance of Qurbani to us.

    Qurbani in Hadith

Our Prophet Muhammed SAW also emphasized to do Qurbani on Eid-ul-Adha. The Hadith below clears the message.

“Sayedatuna Aisha (RadiAllahuanhu) narrates that Rasul Allah said, “There is no dearer deed of Ibne Adam in the days of Qurbani than flowing the blood (doing Qurbani), and that animal will come with his horns, hairs, and hooves on the day of Qayamt. Thee blood of the Qurbani reaches the stage of acceptance before it reaches the floor.” (Tirmizi, Ibnu Majah)

    Final Thoughts

Therefore, Qurbani should be performed by every Muslim if he can afford to do so. Qurbani has a great virtue in Islam, followed by the Quran and Hadith.
